About the Role
As an Engineering Manager at Relay, you will play a pivotal role in driving the technical and delivery success of our engineering teams. This role is built on three core pillars: people leadership, product collaboration, and technical guidance. You will work closely with stakeholders to ensure our teams deliver high-quality, impactful solutions that meet customer needs.
Exceptional communication skills are essential, as you will need to articulate technical challenges, explore potential features, and guide your teams effectively.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of delivery across your teams, ensuring they work at a sustainable and effective pace.
  • Foster a high bar of technical excellence within your teams, supporting the growth and performance of each engineer.
  • Collaborate with product and technical teams to define, prioritize, and communicate upcoming work, leveraging strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Lead and mentor two teams of 6-10 engineers, providing regular 1:1s and continuous feedback to support their development.
  • Understand and address the unique perspectives, challenges, and aspirations of each team member, helping them grow as individuals.
  • Maintain technical expertise by dedicating 10-20% of your time to hands-on technical tasks within the products your teams oversee.
  • Offer actionable insights on tackling complex technical challenges, while empowering team members to take the lead.
  • Partner with the Head of Engineering to implement company-wide policies, objectives, processes, and standards.

Required Expertise
  • Recent hands-on experience in a senior-level technical role. While you won’t be directly working on features or bugs, you must maintain a deep understanding of the applications your teams develop.
Technical Skills
  • 7+ years of senior-level experience with full-stack JavaScript frameworks, spanning both frontend and backend systems.
  • Strong expertise with PostgreSQL, MySQL, or other relational databases.
  • Experience with observability tools and best practices, such as using the Golden Signals.
  • Previous experience in the e-commerce industry.
  • Highly desirable: Proficiency in running containers on AWS/GCP and familiarity with cloud infrastructure platforms.
  • Highly desirable: Experience with e-commerce platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce.
Leadership Skills
  • Proven track record of growing, leading, and managing engineering teams.
  • Ability to provide input on, understand, and challenge engineering decisions.
  • Natural ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve their best.
Product Expertise
  • Experience defining and delivering major initiatives as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Education
  • Highly desirable: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field.
The Interview Process
  • Initial Call (30 minutes): A conversation with our People team to discuss your background, leadership experience, and alignment with Relay’s values.
  • First Round (30 minutes): A discussion with the Head of Engineering, focusing on your experience shaping products and delivering complex solutions.
  • Technical Assessment (Flexible): Demonstrate your technical expertise through a take-home assessment, code samples, or a live pairing exercise.
  • Second Round (1 hour): A deeper dive into your technical skills with the CTO and Head of Engineering.
  • Third Round (1 hour): A conversation with the CEO and other leadership team members, focusing on your ability to guide teams and align on product priorities.
